Joseph Parrish, acclaimed bass-baritone and holder of the Lindemann Vocal Chair, will perform at Merkin Hall in Kaufman Music Center on March 25, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. as part of the prestigious Young Concert Artists series.
For this special evening, Parrish will be joined by the Washington Performing Arts Children of the Gospel Choir, under the artistic leadership of Michele Fowlin. Pianist Francesco Barfoed will provide accompaniment throughout the performance.
The carefully curated program bridges cultural traditions through a diverse repertoire featuring works by Mahler, Schubert, and Brahms alongside compositions by Moses Hogan and Harry T. Burleigh. The evening will also include various spirituals and the New York Premiere of "Psalm," composed by YCA Composer-in-Residence Alistair Coleman.
Reflecting on his artistic vision for the concert, Parrish explained, "I am interested in exploring the common threads that exist between the folk music of African-American and German people. This program highlights African-American art songs, German Lieder, Negro Spirituals, and Lieder with spiritual themes, showcasing these different expressions of our shared humanity."
This performance represents a significant milestone in Parrish's rising career, following his recent acclaim in both operatic and concert settings. Music critics have praised his rich vocal timbre and emotional depth, particularly in his interpretations of diverse cultural repertoire.
The collaboration with the Washington Performing Arts Children of the Gospel Choir promises to add a powerful dimension to the evening, enhancing the spiritual elements of the program with their renowned harmonic excellence and expressive delivery.
