Anna-Maria Helsing has been appointed as the inaugural female chief conductor of the BBC Concert Orchestra, marking a significant milestone in the orchestra's history. Having served as the principal guest conductor since 2020, the Finnish conductor expressed her delight and enthusiasm about the new role.

Commencing on October 1, 2023, Helsing's contract as chief conductor extends until 2026. She conveyed her strong connection with the orchestra, describing her collaboration as a genuine pleasure. Helsing aims to enrich the symphonic repertoire of the orchestra and broaden its reach beyond London, aspiring to captivate audiences in various locations.

Before this appointment, Helsing notably became Finland's first female chief conductor of the Oulu Symphony Orchestra from 2010 to 2013. The BBC Concert Orchestra also boasts other esteemed conductors such as Bramwell Tovey, Barry Wordsworth (currently the conductor laureate), and Keith Lockhart.

As the artistic director of the Rusk chamber music festival in Jakobstad, Finland, Helsing will work closely with Bill Chandler, the director of the BBC orchestra. Chandler emphasized Helsing's deep connection with the team and her exceptional musical abilities, assuring that the orchestra's future will be led with expertise.

Moreover, Helsing will conduct the orchestra at Alexandra Palace on Monday, June 19, for saxophonist Jess Gillam's event titled "This Classical Life: Live!" Additionally, she is slated to lead one of this year's BBC Proms, specifically the "Fantasy, Myths And Legends" concert on August 28 at the Royal Albert Hall, featuring soundtracks from film, TV, and gaming.
