Червень 21, 2023

The Hallé Orchestra has announced that Kahchun Wong will be taking over as the new leader of the orchestra, succeeding Sir Mark Elder. Sir Mark has been at the helm of the Manchester-based orchestra for almost 25 years, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of acclaimed recordings. Wong will assume the role of Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor starting from September 2024, initially signing a five-year contract.

Born in Singapore, Wong rose to prominence by winning the Gustav Mahler Conducting Competition in 2016. From 2018 to 2022, he served as the Chief Conductor of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, Wong will also take on the position of Chief Conductor of the Japan Philharmonic from 2023, following two years as its Principal Guest Conductor.

Expressing his gratitude, Wong stated, "I am deeply honored to be appointed as the new Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the Hallé. I have always held great admiration for the orchestra's exquisite sound and rich traditions. It is a privilege to become a part of Manchester's vibrant cultural scene and to continue the exceptional musical standards set by Sir Mark Elder and our distinguished predecessors. I eagerly look forward to collaborating with the visionary team at the Hallé as we navigate our artistic journey together."

As for Sir Mark Elder, he will assume the role of Conductor Emeritus of the Hallé from the 2024-5 season. Reflecting on his time leading the orchestra, Sir Mark expressed his joy, saying, "Working with these extraordinary musicians and performing for our wonderful audience has been the central focus of my life for nearly 25 years. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to continue cultivating these two relationships as Conductor Emeritus, and I eagerly anticipate many exciting concerts in the years to come. I extend my warmest wishes to Kahchun and have no doubt that the people of Manchester will welcome him with open arms."

In addition to the new conductor appointment, the Hallé also announced that renowned composer, conductor, and pianist Thomas Adès will serve as Artist in Residence for a two-year term, starting from 2023-24.

Kahchun Wong's first performance with the Hallé will take place this Saturday, June 24, at 7pm, at The Bridgewater Hall. The program for the evening includes Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" and John Harle's "Briggflatts," featuring saxophonist Jess Gillam.
