Renowned composer, conductor, and educator Péter Eötvös has been honored with the esteemed 2024 Kossuth Grand Prize. Established in 1936, this accolade celebrates exceptional contributions in science, culture, and the arts, standing as Hungary's foremost cultural recognition.
Eötvös, a pivotal figure in Hungary's contemporary music scene, has received commissions from esteemed ensembles such as the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester, New York Symphony Orchestra, Berliner Philharmoniker, London and Seoul Philharmonic Orchestras, and the Wiener Philharmoniker.
His musical journey commenced at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music's School of Exceptional Young Talents before furthering his education in Cologne, Germany, where he studied composition under the guidance of Bernd Alois Zimmermann and occasionally Karlheinz Stockhausen.
Eötvös's extensive repertoire spans twelve operas, instrumental solo concertos, symphonic compositions of various scales, and chamber music works.
As a conductor, he led the Ensemble Intercontemporain for over a decade, collaborating closely with numerous prominent contemporary composers.
Tamás Sulyok, the Hungarian President, bestowed the award upon Eötvös.
