Vienna Philharmonic Announces 2026 Summer Night Concert Program

The Vienna Philharmonic has officially announced the details for its annual Summer Night Concert. The upcoming performance is scheduled to take place on June 19, 2026. The event, which is traditionally held in the publicly accessible gardens of Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, Austria, will be conducted by Swiss conductor Lorenzo Viotti.

The Summer Night Concert is an open-air event organized annually by the Vienna Philharmonic. Schönbrunn Palace and its surrounding gardens are designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site, providing a historical setting for the performance. Admission to the live concert is free of charge, reflecting the organization's ongoing initiative to broaden public access to live classical music.

For the 2026 program, the orchestra has scheduled a repertoire encompassing various musical eras and historical genres. The orchestral selections will feature compositions by Maurice Ravel, Giacomo Puccini, Franz von Suppé, Florence Price, Jules Massenet, and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

Welsh bass-baritone Bryn Terfel has been announced as the featured soloist for the evening. Terfel, recognized internationally for his extensive operatic career and previous performances with major global opera houses, will deliver a selection of vocal pieces. His programmed repertoire includes arias from Arrigo Boito’s opera Mefistofele and Giuseppe Verdi’s Falstaff. Furthermore, Terfel will perform the finale from Richard Wagner’s Das Rheingold. Broadening the scope beyond traditional operatic works, he will also sing Tevye’s song from the 1964 Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof, composed by Jerry Bock.

The engagement of Lorenzo Viotti as conductor brings a recognized figure in contemporary classical music to the podium. Viotti has previously served as the chief conductor for ensembles including the Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra and the Gulbenkian Orchestra in Lisbon.

In a public statement regarding the event, the Vienna Philharmonic articulated the primary objective of the upcoming performance. The organization stated, "Fortunately, the idea of making classical music accessible to everyone—and thus offering a gift to all music lovers—is once again the guiding principle behind this year’s Summer Night Concert."

The official statement further elaborated on the specific musical selections, noting, "We are delighted that the Summer Night Concert can take place as usual. This year’s program offers a diverse and high-caliber selection of well-known melodies ranging from the worlds of opera, operetta, and musical to ballet music and symphonic works. It is important to us to embrace a wide spectrum of different styles and genres in order to appeal to as many people as possible."

Following historical precedent, the concert is expected to be broadcast internationally, continuing the Vienna Philharmonic's standard practice of transmitting the Summer Night Concert to television and radio audiences globally.
