Sweden's Drottningholm Court Theatre to Premiere Telemann’s 'Orpheus' with New Twist on Classic Myth in August 2025
2 September, 2024

Sweden’s Drottningholm Court Theatre is set to stage Telemann’s opera “Orpheus” for the first time next season. The premiere is scheduled for August 2, 2025. This production marks the debut of this Telemann work at the theatre. Rediscovered in the late 20th century, the opera adds a new dimension to the classic Orpheus and Eurydice story by introducing Orasia, the Queen of Thrace, who is in love with Orpheus.

According to the press release, while the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice underscores the impossibility of altering one’s fate, the addition of Orasia emphasizes that one cannot change another person's destiny either.

Francesco Corti will conduct the performance, having supplemented Telemann’s original, though incomplete, score with music from contemporary Hamburg composers. Elena Barbalich will direct the production. The cast will be announced at a later date.

“Orpheus” will run from August 2 to August 16, 2025.
