Opera Theatre of Saint Louis Unveils Plans for New Performing Arts Center
4 April, 2025

Opera Theatre of Saint Louis (OTSL) has revealed that it has entered into an agreement to acquire a 6.67-acre plot of land, where it intends to construct a cutting-edge performing arts facility.

The site, situated at 8300 Maryland Avenue, is currently undergoing a due diligence evaluation by the organization. Several stages still need to be completed before OTSL can finalize the purchase and proceed with the transaction. At this point, the company is in the initial phase of determining the project’s viability, which involves tasks such as site analysis, architectural planning, budgeting, and preliminary fundraising efforts. Additionally, OTSL will collaborate with the City of Clayton to ensure the proposed designs for the new center are reviewed and approved.

Andrew Jorgensen, OTSL’s General Director, shared his enthusiasm in a press statement: “As we mark our 50th anniversary this year, we’re thrilled about this unique chance to create a new space for our performances. Though we’re just beginning this journey, we’re eager to engage with our Opera Theatre supporters, the Clayton community, local businesses, and other key partners as we take the necessary steps toward redevelopment in the coming months.”

Looking ahead, Opera Theatre of Saint Louis will kick off its season in May 2025 with a production of Strauss II’s “Die Fledermaus,” followed by the debut of “This House,” a new work by Ricky Ian Gordon, Lynn Nottage, and Ruby Aiyo Gerber.

The new performing arts center is envisioned as a transformative addition to the region’s cultural landscape, offering a modern venue for both traditional and innovative works. OTSL aims to design a space that not only enhances the audience experience but also supports the artistic and operational needs of the company. While specific details about the facility’s features—such as seating capacity, technological upgrades, and sustainability measures—have yet to be finalized, the organization has promised to keep the public informed as plans progress. Community input will play a vital role, with OTSL planning to host forums and discussions to gather feedback from residents and stakeholders.

In the meantime, the excitement surrounding the 2025 season is already building. “Die Fledermaus,” a beloved operetta known for its lively music and comedic flair, will set the stage for a season that blends classic repertoire with bold new creations. The premiere of “This House” marks a significant milestone, showcasing OTSL’s commitment to fostering contemporary opera and collaborating with acclaimed artists. As the organization balances its ambitious construction project with its artistic mission, the coming years promise to be a defining chapter in OTSL’s history.
