Opera Colorado’s Board of Directors has named Barbara Lynne Jamison as the organization’s new General Director & CEO, with her tenure beginning on August 1.
Renowned for her innovative leadership, dedication to community involvement, and enthusiasm for fostering deep connections through opera, Jamison brings a dynamic vision to the role.
As the company’s chief executive and artistic leader, Jamison will start collaborating with Opera Colorado’s team this spring, visiting Denver periodically during the transition period. This will enable her to contribute to strategic planning, artistic direction, and community engagement efforts. She succeeds Greg Carpenter, who will conclude his tenure on May 30.
Jamison expressed her excitement, stating, “It is a privilege to join Opera Colorado at this pivotal point in its journey. The organization’s enduring dedication to artistic quality and community service has established a robust and admired legacy. I am eager to partner with the board, staff, and artists to build on this foundation and guide the company’s future alongside Colorado’s vibrant and diverse communities.”
Jamison previously held the position of General Director & CEO at Kentucky Opera and served as Director of Programs and Partnerships at Seattle Opera.
Her extensive experience in opera administration is expected to strengthen Opera Colorado’s position as a cultural leader in the region. During her time at Kentucky Opera, Jamison spearheaded initiatives that expanded audience outreach and diversified programming, earning praise for her ability to balance artistic innovation with operational stability. Similarly, her work at Seattle Opera focused on forging meaningful partnerships with local organizations, enhancing the company’s community impact.
The Board of Directors highlighted Jamison’s appointment as a strategic move to advance Opera Colorado’s mission of delivering world-class performances while deepening its ties with the Denver community. “Barbara’s proven leadership and passion for opera make her the ideal choice to lead Opera Colorado into its next era,” said a board spokesperson.
As she prepares to assume her role, Jamison plans to engage with local stakeholders, including patrons, donors, and community leaders, to ensure that Opera Colorado continues to reflect the needs and aspirations of its audience. Her vision includes exploring new ways to make opera accessible to broader demographics, potentially through innovative productions and educational programs.
Opera Colorado’s upcoming season, which will be shaped in part by Jamison’s input, is anticipated to blend traditional repertoire with contemporary works, reinforcing the company’s commitment to both heritage and innovation. Further details about her strategic priorities and the 2025-2026 season will be announced in the coming months.
