Nicholas McGegan Appointed Music Director Emeritus at Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale
6 June, 2025

The Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra & Chorale has announced that Nicholas McGegan will take on the role of Music Director Emeritus.

From 1985 to 2020, McGegan served as the ensemble’s leader, overseeing nearly 1,000 performances and producing 40 recordings during his tenure.

In his new capacity, McGegan is set to conduct a series of concerts in January and February of the upcoming season. Additionally, he will be celebrated at the ensemble’s Spring Gala on April 10, 2026.

“I’m thrilled to return to PBO regularly to conduct, especially since next season’s programs feature some of my most cherished music,” McGegan shared in an official press statement. “Rameau’s work is close to my heart, and this orchestra excels in bringing his enchanting repertoire to life. It’s been ten years since we last performed his remarkable opera ‘Le Temple de la Gloire,’ with Voltaire’s libretto. I’m also excited to collaborate with my dear friend Francesco Spagnolo for the Jews & Music series—it’s going to be a blast.”

Richard Egarr, who succeeded McGegan as Music Director from 2020 to 2024, will receive the title of Music Director Laureate. The organization plans to reveal its next Music Director in the near future.

As part of his emeritus role, McGegan will also mentor emerging conductors and musicians, sharing his extensive expertise in Baroque and Classical repertoire. His continued involvement ensures that PBO maintains its commitment to historically informed performances, a hallmark of McGegan’s 35-year leadership. The upcoming season’s performances under his direction will include a mix of beloved works and lesser-known gems, showcasing the ensemble’s versatility and dedication to the Baroque tradition.

The Spring Gala on April 10, 2026, will not only honor McGegan’s contributions but also serve as a fundraising event to support PBO’s educational outreach programs. These initiatives aim to engage new audiences and foster a deeper appreciation for early music. Meanwhile, Richard Egarr, as Music Director Laureate, will occasionally guest conduct, maintaining his connection to the ensemble while pursuing other artistic endeavors.

PBO’s leadership expressed enthusiasm about the transition, noting that McGegan’s and Egarr’s ongoing involvement will provide continuity as the organization searches for its next Music Director. The announcement of the new director is anticipated to bring fresh perspectives while building on the ensemble’s rich legacy.
