5 May, 2025

This month, the Korean National Opera Company will bring its talents to Spain for a series of concerts.

To mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between Korea and Spain, the company will stage a “Gala Concert” at the Mirror Hall of Teatro Liceu in Barcelona. The event, scheduled for May 14 at 7 p.m., will feature opera singers Oh Ye-eun, Kim Hyo-joo, Kim Se-rin, Kang Do-ho, Yoo Shin-hee, Kim Won, Jeong Je-hak, and Yoon Hee-seop. They will perform beloved Korean folk songs, including “Longing for Geumgangsan” and “Mountain Village.”

Following this, the company will present a concert version of the opera “A Match Made in Heaven” at the Monumental Theater in Madrid on May 18 at 7:30 p.m. The performance will include the Spanish Millennium Choir and Orchestra, joined by artists from the Korean National Opera Company.

In a press statement, Choi Sang-ho, Artistic Director of the National Opera Company, expressed his excitement: “It’s a privilege to share ‘A Match Made in Heaven,’ a work that captures the essence of life, love, and marriage, with audiences in Spain. I hope for your ongoing support as we continue to showcase the unique beauty and diversity of Korean art on the global stage.”

These performances are part of the company’s broader mission to foster cultural exchange and strengthen ties between Korea and Spain through the universal language of music. Both concerts will highlight the emotional depth and artistic richness of Korean opera, blending traditional elements with contemporary flair. Audiences can expect a captivating experience that bridges cultures, showcasing the vocal prowess of the Korean singers alongside the renowned Spanish ensembles.

Tickets for both events are available through the respective theaters’ websites, with organizers anticipating high demand due to the significance of the anniversary and the rarity of such cross-cultural collaborations. The Korean National Opera Company also plans to engage local communities through workshops and discussions in Spain, further promoting the appreciation of Korean performing arts.
