Joseph Young: A Rising Star in the World of Conducting

Joseph Young, an American conductor, has a thriving guest conducting career. In addition to that, he holds the positions of music director of the Berkeley Symphony and artistic director of ensembles at the Peabody Conservatory, his alma mater.

Stefana Atlas and Joshua John will be representing Young at Arabella Arts, a classical management agency. This agency represents a prestigious roster of artists, including Inbal Segev, Alma Deutscher, and VC Artists Francisco Fullana, Paul Huang, and Charles Yang.

Throughout his career, Young has held various positions in esteemed orchestras. He has served as assistant conductor of the Atlanta Symphony, music director of the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, and resident conductor of the Phoenix Symphony. He was also a League of American Orchestras conducting fellow at the Buffalo Philharmonic and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.

Young's conducting engagements have taken him to renowned orchestras and ensembles worldwide. He has conducted the San Francisco Symphony, Mzansi National Philharmonic Orchestra, Cincinnati Opera, Seattle Symphony, Detroit Symphony, New World Symphony Orchestra, Spoleto Festival Orchestra, Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música, and the Orquesta Sinfónica y Coro de RTVE.

In the 2022/23 season, Young made his debut with the LA Philharmonic and led NYO2 at Carnegie Hall. He also had a residency in the Dominican Republic.

Young has also ventured into opera conducting, leading the Washington National Opera in Jeanine Tesori's opera Blue, which recently received a $25,000 grant from the USA's National Endowment for the Arts. Furthermore, he will make his debut with the National Symphony Orchestra on June 8 and 10, 2023.

Apart from his conducting career, Young is deeply committed to education and serves on the board of New Music USA. Through this role, he contributes to amplifying a diverse range of musical voices and stories from both historical and contemporary perspectives. He has been mentored by esteemed conductors such as Gustav Meier, Markand Thakar, Jorma Panula, Robert Spano, and Marin Alsop, with whom he frequently collaborates.
