Jason Buckwalter Appointed General Director of Maryland Opera: A New Era for Baltimore’s Classical Scene
9 September, 2024

The Maryland Opera has announced the appointment of Jason Buckwalter as its new General Director.

Buckwalter, a prominent figure in Baltimore’s classical music and theater scene, has performed with numerous local organizations, including Baltimore Opera, Lyric Opera Baltimore, Baltimore Concert Opera, Young Victorian Theatre Company, Annapolis Chorale, Annapolis Opera, and Washington National Opera.

He began his tenure with Maryland Opera as an administrative assistant in 2018, following the closure of Lyric Opera Baltimore.

In a statement, Buckwalter expressed his enthusiasm: “Opera has always been a deep passion of mine, and transitioning from performing to an administrative role has only intensified that passion. I believe that the future of opera lies in education and outreach, and finding ways to engage with our community is essential.”

This season, the company will feature “Morte e Vita,” showcasing the concluding acts of Puccini’s “La Bohème,” “Madama Butterfly,” and “Manon Lescaut,” along with a production of “Carmen.”
