Giancarlo Guerrero Bids Farewell: Nashville Symphony's Music Director Steps Down After a Decade of Transformative Leadership
June 3, 2023

After serving as the Nashville Symphony's music director for more than ten years, Giancarlo Guerrero has decided to step down from his position. Throughout his tenure, which began in the 2009-2010 season, Guerrero played a crucial role in guiding the symphony through challenging times, including the COVID-19 pandemic. In a 2022 interview with WPLN News, Guerrero expressed his pride in the symphony's resilience, highlighting their unwavering commitment to their mission even in the face of adversity. He emphasized the symphony's continuous forward momentum, recognizing music as a dynamic and living entity that should be accessible to all, including the audience, musicians, and composers.

During his time as music director, Guerrero spearheaded the commissioning and premiere of more than a dozen new works, collaborating with renowned artists such as Ben Folds and Bela Fleck. Additionally, under his guidance, the Nashville Symphony received 11 Grammy Awards for their live-recorded commercial albums.

The symphony has announced that Guerrero will officially step down at the conclusion of the 2024-25 season. Following his departure, he will assume the role of music director laureate for two years, during which he will return to lead the orchestra for four weeks annually. The search for his successor will be carried out by a committee comprising members from the board of directors, musicians, administrative staff, and volunteers.

Born in Nicaragua and raised in Costa Rica, Guerrero developed a passion for music at a young age, becoming involved with a youth symphony during his time in Costa Rica. One aspect of his lasting impact is his dedication to teaching various youth orchestras, including the Accelerando program at the Nashville Symphony.
