Eleonora Buratto to Conclude Donizetti Trilogy with "Roberto Devereux" at Palau de les Arts
4 June, 2025

Soprano Eleonora Buratto is preparing to perform the final chapter of Donizetti’s opera trilogy with “Roberto Devereux” at the Palau de les Arts in Valencia.

The production, directed by Jetske Mijnssen and conducted by Francesco Lanzillotta, will feature Buratto alongside Lodovico Filippo Ravizza, Silvia Tro Santafé, and Ismael Jordi.

In a statement, Buratto shared her enthusiasm: “Having performed ‘Anna Bolena’ and ‘Maria Stuarda,’ I now step into the role of Queen Elizabeth I, the focal point of Donizetti’s three operas inspired by his fascination with English history. Despite the title ‘Roberto Devereux,’ the opera centers on the ‘Virgin Queen.’ I’m deeply honored to have planned my debut in all three works with the Palau de les Arts, Valencia. This remarkable opportunity has allowed me, in just a few years, to explore vocally and theatrically compelling characters, tracing Donizetti’s artistic development. In ‘Roberto Devereux,’ this is reflected in the disciplined orchestral writing and the complex, tragic portrayal of Elisabetta, a character who embodies both the rage of betrayed royalty and more tender emotions, like the consuming, heart-wrenching jealousy expressed through extraordinary vocal virtuosity. This blend of strength and vulnerability, crafted by Donizetti and librettist Cammarano, presents Elisabetta as a commanding yet fragile figure, torn by inner conflict.”

The production of “Roberto Devereux” will premiere on June 4, 2025, and continue through June 18, 2025.

Buratto’s portrayal of Elisabetta is anticipated to be a highlight of the season, building on her acclaimed performances in the earlier operas of the trilogy. The production promises to showcase Mijnssen’s innovative directorial vision, which emphasizes the psychological depth of the characters, paired with Lanzillotta’s nuanced conducting, bringing Donizetti’s intricate score to life. The Palau de les Arts, known for its commitment to bold and artistically rich opera productions, provides an ideal setting for this exploration of one of Donizetti’s most dramatic works. Audiences can expect a staging that balances historical grandeur with the intimate emotional turmoil of its central figure, offering a fresh perspective on the iconic queen. Tickets for the performances are already in high demand, with opera enthusiasts eager to witness Buratto’s interpretation of this multifaceted role and the culmination of her journey through Donizetti’s celebrated trilogy.
