Deutsche Oper am Rhein Appoints New Chorus Master

The Deutsche Oper am Rhein has named Albert Horne as its new chorus master, marking a significant transition in its leadership.

Starting in the 2025-26 season, Horne will assume his role, taking over from Gerhard Michalski.

Since 2014, Horne has served as Chorus Master and Conductor at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden in Germany. He earned a Master’s Degree in Music from the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Prior to his tenure in Wiesbaden, he held the position of Chorus Master and Conductor at Cape Town Opera from 2007 to 2014.

In addition to his choral expertise, Horne has an extensive background as an orchestral conductor. He has led performances with notable ensembles such as Orchestra Victoria in Melbourne and Orchestre Pasdeloup in Paris. His operatic conducting experience includes engagements at renowned opera houses in Bordeaux, Malmö, Tel Aviv, London’s English National Opera (ENO), and Cardiff’s Welsh National Opera (WNO).

Horne’s appointment brings a wealth of international experience to the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, promising to enhance the company’s choral performances. His decade-long tenure at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden has been marked by critically acclaimed productions, showcasing his ability to lead and inspire choral ensembles. During his time at Cape Town Opera, from 2007 to 2014, Horne similarly demonstrated his skill in shaping dynamic and expressive vocal performances.

With a strong foundation in music education from the Guildhall School, Horne has cultivated a versatile career that spans both choral and orchestral conducting. His work with Orchestra Victoria in Melbourne and Orchestre Pasdeloup in Paris highlights his ability to collaborate with diverse ensembles. Furthermore, his engagements at major opera houses, including Bordeaux, Malmö, Tel Aviv, London’s ENO, and Cardiff’s WNO, underscore his adaptability and expertise in the operatic repertoire, positioning him as a valuable addition to the Deutsche Oper am Rhein’s artistic team.
