Annalisa Stroppa to Lead New Production of Bizet's Carmen Across Three Italian Regional Theaters

Italian mezzo-soprano Annalisa Stroppa is scheduled to perform the title role in a new regional production of Georges Bizet's opera Carmen. The production will tour three historic venues within the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy during the month of April. The scheduled run begins at the Teatro Comunale di Modena, where performances will take place on April 10 and April 12. The production will then transition to the Teatro Municipale di Piacenza for performances on April 17 and April 19. The final leg of this regional tour will conclude at the Teatro Alighieri di Ravenna, with dates set for April 24 and April 26.

This staging of the popular French opera is a collaborative effort developed in conjunction with the OperaLombardia circuit, an organization known for coordinating operatic productions across various Italian municipalities. The musical direction for these performances will be overseen by conductor Audrey Saint-Gil, who will lead the orchestra through Bizet's score. The theatrical staging and dramatic interpretation are under the direction of Italian opera director Stefano Vizioli. Joining Stroppa on stage is a principal cast featuring Joseph Dahdah, Gianluca Failla, and Jaquelina Livieri, who will take on the prominent supporting roles within the narrative.

The opera Carmen, which originally premiered at the Opera-Comique in Paris on March 3, 1875, remains one of the most frequently performed works in the standard international operatic repertoire. The narrative is adapted from the 1845 novella of the same name by French author Prosper Merimee. The French-language libretto, which structures the dialogue and vocal numbers, was written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halevy. The story centers on the tragic consequences of a volatile relationship set in Seville, Spain, focusing heavily on themes of jealousy, fate, and independence.

In a public statement regarding her upcoming performances, Stroppa offered an analysis of the protagonist's enduring psychological appeal and historical significance. The mezzo-soprano stated that whenever she prepares to interpret the role, immersing herself in both the new production details and Bizet's sophisticated musical composition, she reflects on the character's fascinating nature. Stroppa described Carmen as a gypsy cigar maker who operates outside conventional legal and social boundaries, prioritizing her personal freedom and unrestrained desires over any potential consequences.

Furthermore, Stroppa characterized the protagonist not as a traditional positive role model, but rather as a definitive symbol of nonconformity. She argued that the modernity of the character is rooted in this intense longing for self-determination. According to Stroppa, the collaborative work of Merimee, the librettists Meilhac and Halevy, and the compelling musical framing by Bizet collectively established Carmen's fierce awareness of her own agency. She concluded her statement by noting that this specific combination of literary foundation and musical execution transforms the character into a tragic heroine whose narrative remains continually relevant to contemporary audiences.
