André Callegaro has been selected as the Conductor in Residence at the Royal Swedish Opera, where he will take up his role starting October 1. During his tenure, Callegaro will work closely with Royal Kapellmeister Alan Gilbert, Artistic Music Director Tobias Theorell, and visiting guest conductors. His responsibilities will include aiding in musical preparations and leading a variety of opera and ballet performances.

Currently, Callegaro serves as Kapellmeister and Studienleiter at Theater Aachen in Germany. He honed his skills in orchestral conducting at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar and the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. As part of the Jette Parker Artists Program at the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, he had the opportunity to collaborate with renowned conductors such as Sir Antonio Pappano, Antonello Manacorda, Nicola Luisotti, and Mark Wigglesworth, among others. Additionally, he is a recipient of a scholarship from the Richard Wagner Verband Bayreuth. Callegaro emerged as the standout candidate from a competitive pool of 250 applicants representing over 30 countries.

In a press statement, Alan Gilbert expressed enthusiasm, saying, “I’m truly excited about the opportunity to collaborate with André. His audition performance was exceptional, and I’m confident his contributions will greatly enhance the musical endeavors at the Royal Swedish Opera.”

Callegaro’s appointment is expected to bring fresh energy to the Royal Swedish Opera’s productions. His extensive experience in both opera and orchestral conducting, combined with his international background, positions him to make a significant impact on the institution’s artistic output. During his residency, he will focus on refining the orchestra’s performances and fostering a collaborative environment among the musical staff. His role will also involve mentoring younger musicians and contributing to the opera’s educational outreach programs, which aim to engage new audiences with the art form.

Callegaro has expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, noting, “It is an honor to join the Royal Swedish Opera and work alongside such distinguished colleagues. I look forward to contributing to the vibrant cultural legacy of this institution.” His tenure is anticipated to strengthen the opera’s reputation as a leading center for musical excellence, with upcoming seasons featuring a diverse repertoire of classic and contemporary works under his baton.
